Abington's mentorship program, Abington Leads By Example, attended their April monthly meeting at the middle school on April 8th to make pasta towers held by marshmallows. This allowed the chance for our high school mentors to get to know their mentees better by allowing creativity and outside-the-box pasta creations, while informing them about high school life and preparing the way for future freshmen! On Tuesday, April 14, 2025 students in Spanish 4H, 5, and AP participated in an interactive cultural experience connected to what they are learning in Spanish class. Students enjoyed salsa and bachata lessons followed by social dancing in Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, and Bachata. The lesson started with a brief history of the origins of dance and continued with steps for each genre of dance. After working up a huge appetite, students enjoyed a buffet of delicious Latin foods: arroz con habichuela (rice and beans), rotini criollo con carne picadillo y queso blanco (Spanish style pasta dish with beef picadillo and white cheese), albondigas criollas (Spanish style meatballs), chuletas criollas (Spanish style pork cutlets), platanos fritos (Plantain strips), pan dulce (sweet rolls) and desserts! Alumni Spotlight: As the Phillies season begins, we would like to highlight alumnus and class of 1944 graduate Don Haysenmayer, a second and third baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies. He appeared in 11 Major League games throughout his career while also playing for various minor league teams such as the Bradford Blue Wings and the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Haysenmayer was also a Navy veteran who served on the USS Kearsarge during the end of WWII. Thank you for your service, and go Phillies! We are #AbingtonProud #ASHSProud #firstinathletics

Mr. Levandoski’s 5th period Honors English III class welcomed local DJ, Mike Vasilikos, from listener-supported WXPN in Philadelphia on Friday, March 14th, to discuss career opportunities in broadcasting and offer some insight on the circuitous nature of life’s path. Mike shared his experiences as a college student and fledgling DJ at Towson University, as well as his subsequent career at WXPN. He offered students some much-needed wisdom as to how to cultivate a path out of curiosity, self-motivation, and an open mind about future success. #AbingtonProud #ASHSProud #FirstinAcademics
Congrats to the Abington Senior High chess team for their outstanding performance this weekend at the Pennsylvania State Chess Championship in Harrisburg. At the event, our u1300 team of Qing Chen, Blaize Wijeyeratne, Will Michalski, Sofi Ebora, and Thristan Lundy placed 2nd in the state. As individuals Qing took 2nd place in her division and Blaize placed 8th. William and Sofi took individual honors for their play in that division. In the u1000, Abington’s team of Gareth Hansplant, Asher Rourke, Roman Lee, Nick Young, and Eliot Weber placed 3rd in the State. Gareth, Asher, and Eliot were all commended for their individual play. Matt Chen was recognized for his play in the Open division. The Ghosts will compete at USCF Supernationals in May. #AbingtonProud #ASHSProud #FirstinActivities

Back in 2012, Abington Chess won our first place at Nationals in the u1200 division. Coach, Shawn Simmons reflects fondly, "On that cold and rainy weekend in Minneapolis, my favorite memory came in the final round. Ben Kruger asked a tournament director if he could speak to me as his coach. This is a customary thing in the final round of team chess tournaments. Ben said, 'I don't need anything, coach, just wanted you to know we are winning the Championship.' The foundation those guys set for our program keeps us striving for more. This year, we will compete in Orlando in May and hope to bring home our 5th, first-place finish. Go Ghosts!" On Saturday, March 22, Abington Senior High School's M3 (Modern Music Makers) program hosted the 3rd Annual Modern Music Invitational. This multifaceted event worked to create opportunities for students and educators within the context of the greater music industry.
