Description

The National Junior Honor Society holds monthly meetings and activities throughout the year. Aside from discussing upcoming activities and events, these meetings provide a forum for members to meet speakers from various backgrounds. Some speakers in the past have represented the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, Human Resources personnel, a Holocaust survivor, and a judge, among others.

The National Junior Honor Society conducts numerous service-oriented activities throughout the school year, including tutoring services held after school for Abington Middle School students, school tours and orientation programs for new students and incoming 6th-grade classes, assisting with Back to School Night each fall, and creating picture books for kindergarten students at Overlook Elementary School.

Eligibility Requirements:

During the 2024-2025 school year, current 7th and 8th graders will be considered for membership in the NJHS. Students will be deemed eligible to apply for NJHS based on their 6th or 7th grade performance during the 2023-2024 school year, respectively.

To be eligible to apply, students must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • 3.7 cumulative unweighted GPA or higher

  • Full participation in two or more school-based activities during the 2023-2024 academic year

as verified by coaches/activity sponsors via Skyward

    • School-based activities are those sponsored by Abington Middle School. Activities which are

not sponsored by AMS do NOT count towards admission.

    • Please note: Membership alone in any school-based activity does NOT guarantee credit for full participation. Full participation is determined at the discretion of the coach/activity sponsor

who reports the list of active participants via Skyward. Students are recommended to speak

with the coach/club sponsor to identify requirements for full participation credit.

  • Completion of 10 or more service learning hours during the 2023-2024 school year

    • Service learning hours may include those conducted with a school activity and/or outside of

school hours. Hours completed during the application window will NOT be accepted.

    • All service learning hours must be logged, dated, and signed by an adult supervisor/sponsor: Click Here for the Log

    • Service learning hours must meet the following criteria listed here

Students who meet the above criteria will be invited to apply for NJHS. Please note that an invitation to apply does not guarantee admission into NJHS. Students are required to fulfill the eligibility requirements, fully complete the application, and submit the application along with their service learning log by the deadline. Late applications will NOT be accepted. Students who transfer to AMS from another district or school are eligible to apply for NJHS upon submission of a letter from the transferring institution indicating eligibility for the transferring school’s chapter of NJHS.

Maintaining Membership Requirements:

Attendance is required at a minimum of 3 meetings throughout the year. Various opportunities are offered to fulfill meeting requirements, such as tutoring, participation in the kindergarten book trip, and attending guest speaker sessions. Students will receive 1 meeting credit for each meeting attended and 2 meeting credits for each service project in which they fully participated.

In addition, members are expected to maintain a 3.7 GPA, participate in two or more school-based activities (not including NJHS), and complete a minimum of 10 logged service-learning hours submitted at the end of the school year.

All service learning hours must be logged, dated, and signed by an adult supervisor/sponsor: Click Here for the Log

Service learning hours must meet the following criteria listed here.

A member of NJHS who does not meet the above requirements will be marked as a “member not in good standing” on the transcript sent to the high school.
